The Georgina Sweet Awards for Women in Physics/STEM were created by Professor Catherine Stampfl as part of her Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship program to promote and support female scientists in the area of Physics and STEM related subjects.
Georgina Sweet (1875-1946) was a zoologist, academic, philanthropist and women's rights activist. She was the first woman to graduate with a Doctor of Science from the University of Melbourne and was the first female acting professor in an Australian university. She published widely and came to be judged the country's foremost parasitologist.
